FCC Copper Retirement: What It Means for Businesses and Cat6 Cabling

The telecommunications industry is moving away from older copper telephone networks as providers transition to fiber-optic, IP-based, and wireless technologies. This change is sometimes called "copper retirement" or "POTS retirement." For businesses, it is important to understand what is actually being retired, and what is not.

What is being retired

The FCC has established rules governing the retirement of legacy telecommunications facilities and services, particularly traditional copper telephone networks. These systems were commonly used for landline phones, fax machines, DSL, and some alarm and monitoring systems.

As providers replace these older networks, businesses that still depend on traditional telephone lines may need to move those services to newer technologies. That matters most for systems such as:

  • Fire alarm communications
  • Security systems
  • Elevator phones
  • Fax machines
  • Traditional business telephone lines

Determine whether any critical equipment still depends on a legacy telephone line before that service is discontinued.

Does this mean Cat6 is being retired?

No. FCC copper retirement should not be confused with the copper Ethernet cabling installed inside commercial buildings. Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A are modern structured cabling systems designed for Ethernet data networks. They connect computers, network switches, wireless access points, security cameras, VoIP phones, and other network devices.

Cat6 is not the same technology as the legacy telephone infrastructure being retired by telecommunications providers.

Fiber and Cat6 work together

Modern commercial networks frequently use both fiber and copper. The internet provider delivers fiber to the network equipment, and Cat6 carries the connection from there to computers, phones, cameras, and Wi-Fi access points.

Fiber handles internet service and high-speed backbone connections. Cat6 provides the network connections to individual devices throughout the building. The combination uses the strengths of both technologies.

What should businesses do

Do not assume that the retirement of telephone copper means all copper cabling needs to be replaced. Instead, identify which systems are using legacy telephone service and determine whether they need to be upgraded. At the same time, evaluate the condition and capability of the building's existing structured cabling.

If your business is installing a new network, expanding an existing one, or preparing for future technology upgrades, properly designed Cat6 or Cat6A structured cabling remains an important part of the network infrastructure.

The bottom line

Legacy copper telephone networks are being phased out. Cat6 Ethernet cabling is not. The two technologies serve different purposes, and understanding the difference helps businesses avoid unnecessary cabling replacement while making sure older telephone-dependent systems are ready for the transition.

For commercial cabling projects, the goal is not to eliminate copper. The goal is to use the right cabling technology for the application.
